Title: My new Hudson Bay Knife
Post by: rifleshooter2 on April 22, 2012
Here is a step by step of the construction of my latest knife.
I used an old lawnmower blade for the steel.

Heated cherry red then pounded flat.

Cut to length. I wanted a smaller knife with just a 6 1/4 inch blade.

Cut out with the band saw

Ground to profile and scales.

Quenching in oil after heating cherry red

Hardened

Tempering in the oven.

Scales attached

All sanded down and oiled up. Next comes the sheath.

Total cost Nothing all scrap material.  ;D

Looks great. Curious as to temp and time you temper it at in the oven. Each of us have different times and temps we prefer, and think itd be cool to get a discussion going on that. Voy

I went about 475 for 1 Hour. I keep them a little soft. I would rather sharpen it more than risk it breaking.

That's really cool rifleshooter2. I never thought a lawn mower blade could be a knife. It's real nice too.

Walker, see if you can find an old railroad spike, when you and your dad come over we will see about making a knife form it and a couple of old mower blades I have around here...  And yes we will take pictures!
