Title: My shooting partner
Post by: melsdad on September 29, 2008, 01:59:14 PM
I took my daughter 4½ years old with me to shoot my September postal shoots. Everytime I leave to go shooting she always wants to go with me, so this time I made her day. I was not sure what to expect, and hoped her attention span would last long enough to get 16 shots off. It turned out I was ready to go before she was. I think I shot 5 or 6 targets on the trail walk course to make her happy. First off I taught her how to be safe, and the basics of the muzzloader, she now knows all the major parts of the gun. I let her pour the powder down the barrel a few times, and she liked working the ramrod. Even though I have a short barrel half stock she still had to stand on a stump to help me load the rifle I think that is what kept her interested. Heck she even wanted to help me clean the gun once we got home. Her birthday is in May, and I think I see a little cricket 22 cal. rifle in her future.

Your a lucky man! With any luck you'll have a shooting pardner for a long time. Brings back memories... I started my son off the same way...his first gun was a Cricket .22. That's been a lot of years now...still remember his first shot. :)

That's just too much, Brian!  :D She's a cutie! They are like little sponges at this age. Eager for knowledge.

Brian , you'll have to make her up a little .32 perc. with about an 11-1/2" lop and 20 " barrel ! She'll be ready before you know it !

That sounds like a good project.

Keep up the good work!!!  Sept. 3,4,5 I had the pleasure of meeting with my 26yr. old daughter for a dove shoot.  She drove 280mi. and I drove 225mi. to meet at Davis Camp AZ.  She also wanted to go out as a youngster, so I took her.. She likes cartridge guns for birds.  For her 13th B.D. she got her first "double shot".  (410 double). At 14 she shifted up to her 28ga pump for pheasants.  She is now looking forward to her  8yr old son getting his hunter safety course over.(next month). Then he can shoot as well as birddog. I am putting togeather  a couple of short barrel 40cal rifles for the grand kids. Maybe I can get them away form the cartidges for some of their shooting. In a year or two they can go with me to the NMLRA shoot at Ben Avery (Phoenix). So as I said "Keep up the good work" the rewards will be there for years to come.
