If you don't take Backwoodsman or you are not familiar with this magazine let me urge you to pick up a copy. I am not affiliated with them but they have published a few of my articles. It is just good information on self sufficient living. There is usually a black powder article or two in each issue. I have been taking it all my life and have kept most of the back issues and refer to them over and over. ET thmbsup

"Backwoodsman" is a great magazine! I used to have a subscription and enjoyed every issue but now I just pick them up at the local Walmart when the new issues come in. If you've never picked one up grab one and enjoy!

noticed yesterday you can also get them at krogers
I'll have to check out kroger's and see..Thanks Kris...
I like the mag, but be careful, I can't remember exactly the article, but I think it was about bow tillering it was nice for ideas, but completely wrong technically. I do enjoy the magazine though.
HEB has fresh tortillas in some of the stores. and the store in flowerbluff has buffalo in the custom butcher shop
Wal-Mart carries it here in Washington State. If You ask the periodical manager, they may be able to start stocking it for You. I am not plugging Wal-Mart, it just happens to be the place I find My copy...

Kroger's (3 stores) here in the dayton area doesn't carry it.I have a few other places to check for it...
Anyone else around Dayton ohio that carries it? Let me know....
I believe he "trades" stuff for subscriptions also. I remember seeing an add in the back of the magazine that he trades for "old fishing lures" and such.....
He also trades subscriptions for old carbon steel knives. Or if you write a good how to article he sometimes trades subscriptions for those. That is one reason I like the magazine as the majority of articles are written by those that actually do the things they write about instead of just writers opinions. ET 'shok'
I've been a subscriber for 7 years been buying it at Krogers before that and I love it great articles. :applause:
I have been buying the Backwoodsman Mag. for many years. It is a great source of info. on just about any thing a person would want to know about. Everything from muzzloading to food perserving to recipes. Almost a must have for people interested in how to survive in todays world. thmbsup
It's like an on-going Fox Fire series! Lot's of good stuff, some junk, but WELL worth the price! If you haven't,check out the Fox Fire series of book's,especialy #5.
read the mag , but not every issue . usually look through it and if there`s nothing I find interesting I pass on it ! every now and then you find a good one with several articles worth reading ! I`d recommend it !
I had a few of the Foxfire books a few years back. That was before I quit loaning out to friends. I guess they just didn't come home. I'm going to start looking for some of them at used book stores.
Been a faithful readera long time now

You might try Meijers, I know the stores in the Columbus/Delaware, OH stores have them.
I happen to love the magazine, and it has it's own shelf in my shop. If I were to pick one magazine this would be the one I'd pick, I love the articles. Have been a subscriber for some time.
If you live in Colorado. I was surprised to find it in City Markets. Check it out.
I know...old thread, but new info. ;D
I know this is an old post but I'm new here and I had to chime in. I've been a subscriber of Backwoodsman for several years and I have kept every issue. It always has interesting black powder articles as well as articles on non muzzleloading guns. In fact I contributed an article on inexpensive handguns that is published in the current issue. I love this magazine because it focuses on the average person and how they pursue their outdoor and self reliance hobbies in an affordable way. Its not a slick professionally written magazine loaded with ads for high priced guns and gear. I really respect what Charlie Richie is trying to do.

About 15 years ago they offered life-time subscriptions for, IIRC, $250 and I got one so they'll keep coming to me every other month until I'm pushing up daisies! I contacted Charlie a couple of years ago to see if he would reprint an article on building a piroque. Next thing I know, there is a copy of the issue with the original article in my mail box. Good folks there in Texas!

I need to get a subscription to this one - thought i had then realized I was getting traditional Muzzleloading...
Hello, I'm a very long time reader. Thoroughly enjoy the magazine. It is loaded with DIY articles. I only wish they had a muzzleloading article in every issue but then again it is not a muzzleloading magazine. Really great magazine.
Thanks
I've been a subscriber to Muzzleloader Magazine for years. It's usually full of articles about muzzleloaders/ hunting and more.
I subscribe to Muzzleloader also and enjoy it very much. The only beef I have with it, if you can call it a beef, is its focus on custom flintlocks. Some of us will never own a custom muzzleloader. All my rifles are production percussion guns and I love to shoot all of them. Some I've built from kits and none of them cost more than $300. I wish Muzzleloader would pay more attention to us pedestrian muzzleloader shooters.

You need to express your displeasure with muzzleloader magazine with the editor of the magazine. He does listen to folks and you have a valid point. I agree with you. They also are getting very heavy with advertising and thin on articles. I just didn't renew my subscription to it as my way of complaining. The folks on this and other forums are more intune to my way of doing things.

Others have also complained. I'll never own a one-of-a-kind $4,000 gun and that's alright with me. I often skip over those type articles.
IMHO that mag went downhill when Scurlock sold it... I don't get any right now but have hinted to the grandkids that a complete library of backwoodsman CD's would be a nice gift for Christmas and birthday combination :) of course ya'll could chip in for them also :) pnic
