Title: Ga Highland Rangers 1742
Post by: Capn D on December 03, 2011, 07:31:50 PM
This picture was taken of me and my wife when we were in GA Highland Rangers re-enacting 1742 invasion of GA by Spanish from Florida at St. Augustine.

Awhile ago....

Thanks for posting these. I've found it interesting to go back and look at pics of Ft King George and how it's been built up and how it's grown.

Judging by the background in the last one you posted, that was before the rest of the fort was built around the blockhouse? Now they not only have the stockade walls but the barracks, officer's quarters, physician's quarters, cookhouse, blacksmith's shop, and several huts. And they are currently working on a few new structures in the primitive village area.

If you'd like, I can post a few pics of what the fort looks like now along with a pic or 2 of what the current group of rag tag ruffians that call themselves the Highland Independant Co of Darien.

I'd love to see those,

When we were doing this event there was only the block house and they had no artillery so we dragged five pieces down there and would shoot several in the parade ground over the berms as well as one 3pndr from the block house.  There were a few guys down there then also.  Probably about 7 or eight of them there and we were based in the Atlanta area and affiliated with the 78th Frazer Highlanders Ft. New Inverness Garrison here.  We just dragged down there each season.  We had a really bad experience one fall and never went back down again.  I'd be glad to tell you about if in person if we meet up in Winder.  I have lots of early pictures of the Ft.

I'd love to see the pics. And if all works out well, I plan to be in Winder next weekend, even if only for the day on Saturday.

Very enjoyable and informative , please continue to post photos and what dates the Ft. will be having more reenactments etc. I used to live in north central Florida and have driven through Ga. many times but never had time to stop at only a few of the many historical sights . Thanks for posting .

Check these out.  I put them on SkyDrive.

Ft. King George 1990 (the last year we participated there).  A quick funny story, two years ago I took my grandson to the Indian Exhibition at Stone Mountain.  One of the exhibits was run by two of the Creek guys that are shown in these pictures and one is in yours I think "Sawgrass" .  Anyway, back in 1990 my daughter was terrified of their paint and dress and walked a wide path around them.  Last two years her son has enjoyed their exhibit more than anything else at Stone Mountain!

Anyway, notice the line of coehorn mortars and a view over the breech of the 3pndr from the block house as well as the view from outside the blockhouse when the 3pndr fired.  The guys delighted in loading the coehorns with wet spanish moss as wadding and dropping big black sooty globs on the "Spanish" guys from St. Augustine outside the walls.

Aye sir, that would have been Sawgrass (no quotes, it's his real last name) at Stone Mountain. Little Big-Mountain is his partner in crime. Both good guys and good friends. And when it comes to the kids, they'll act like monkeys if necessary to be sure they're entertained.

I use photobucket to post pics. Sometimes I have to reduce them to fit the parameters of the site, but I like the way they turn out when I post them that way.

Bet that glob of moss did look cool. But in this day of CYA's, nothing down but powder. They (and most other events now) even make you leave the rammers in camp come time for the battles.

Oh yeah, Cap'n, a link would make viewing those pics so much easier.... thmbsup

Here it is again,

Sorry.  It was there and then was gone.

And I'm glad some safety practices are followed down there.  On one event we had over 250 cartridges stolen by some of the Florida kids.  Found them when we heard blanks being fired out in the marsh.  They had broken into the camp powder storage facility and taken a case.  Another time, all the trunnion pins disappeared.  That same event, one of the spaniards who was intoxicated bayonetted one of our guys through his hand.  There were a couple of other equally stupid events.  We never took ram rods into the field with the muskets but had to use them with the artillery and the nationally approved safety drill.  At that time there were some conflicts between the state approved drill and National Parks approved drill.  We were certified for National Parks and no one down there ever asked at all.  I knew in subsequent years things changed.  I had an opportunity to speak with the persons in charge of safety down there several years later during the Highland Games at Stone Mountain and again at Loch Norman.

Good looking pics Rob!

Yes, safety first. The powers that be there now enforce it above all else. If someone is seen doing something stupid, we're not above calling them out right then and there. skrt

Might be nice to have you join us in March for the Scottish Heritage Day event. dntn
