Title: I'll try to keep this brief
Post by: pilgrim on December 01, 2011
 ROFL,  Thats a joke, brief I never will be!   Well I just finished cleaning the GPH barrel.  Had a very good day at range today.  I want and Need to thank you all for helping with my decision back in February 2011, to get a Lyman GPR.  A special Thanks to William for suggesting a Lyman GPR and a Special Thanks to Flintboomer for mentioning Conicals.  And also special Thanks to Mongrel for saying that to shoot conicals with heavy loads, I would need a heavy barrel as in GPR.  Well I recently got hold of a Lyman great plains Hunter barrel in 54 cal.  Also got a Lyman peep sight and globe front sight,  OLD eyes.   Well today I went to the range and shot the 54 with 80 grn 2F.  Tried fiber wads and card wads over powder with 415 grn Maxi bullet.  Finally settled on just 80 grn 2f and maxi bullet.  Still have alot of work to do, in sighting, then off hand shooting, but had a fantastic day.  In just 30 shots total,  the rifle managed to place a 3 shot group in appox 1 1/2" at 50 yards from a barrel rest.  I am NOW definately sold on the Lyman GPR.  Also look forward to getting a Maxi mold to cast my own bullets.  Thanks again to all here on TMC.    This post may have been better posted elsewhere, but It is sort of my range report, with a SPECIAL THANKYOU.

          Thanks again to ALL

That's just plumb good to hear Pilgrim, I'm glad you had such good success!  Be sure and compare the accuracy of the maxi-balls against the Lee REAL bullets, my GPH just loves the 250 grain examples and 95 grains of 3f Goex.

Pilgram,

If you ever get tired of that GPR Hunter, I will gladly take it off of your hands.
Hopefullyone day I can get me one.
I like to shoot RB a lot, but conicals bring out the "What can this thing really do to that target or deer? "
So far I like both equally. RB for target  and conicals for hunting.

And if you are lucky your rifle likes both PRB and conicals. Some do and some don't. I have had some that liked one or the other and some that liked both. I have also had a couple that didn't like either one, so it was time to get rid of them.

Here is my GPH barrel next to my Cabelas Hawken barrel, both of which fit on the same stock;

I had to cut out a bulge in it that came about due to a short started load, according to the previous owner.  I added the brass front sight and adjustable rear buckhorn that together make for a great combination.

     It is nive to have such a versatile rifle.  One stock two different barrels, also make it inexpensive.
