Title: Deer and Squirrel season conflict !!!
Post by: roundball on September 25, 2008, 10:08:21 PM
OK, my first R&R:   >:(

I'm "rantin-N-ravin" mad that the State of North Carolina waits to start squirrel season at the same time deer season starts...given the choice I always opt for deer hunting.

Then when Deer season closes Jan 1st, squirrel hunting in bare woods without a dog during January & February is almost impossible.

You've definitely have a no win situation there. But then the seasons weren't designed for your convenience, only for the states. You surely don't expect sensibly planned seasons, do you? :o.

Bowhunters Association calls the shots from labor Day until October gun season...they don't want ANYBODY in THEIR woods while THEY'RE hunting...

Here the squirrel season starts 2 weeks before the bow season.  But, there are not that many squirrel hunters.  The few times that I have gone, I don't think I have seen another hunter (but plenty of squirrels!).  And it is not that we don't have any squirrels, red, black, grey - we have lots of them all. Too bad you don't have a Squirrel Hunters Association with a lot of members to raise a little havoc with the state officials.

In Polk County, Texas where my hunting lease is, Squirrel Season starts October 1 and runs through January.  Bow season usually starts the Saturday before October 1.  Regular gun season opens around November 1 and usually last until the first Sunday in January.

Lots of squirrel and the hunting is easy without a dog.  Just ease through the woods and watch for shaking limbs in the trees.  Squirrels go out on the end of the limbs to collect acorns.  On a still morning you can see the limbs shaking from quite far away.

Da Backwoodsman,  There's no season on rabbits and can be taken year round.  Because of rabbit fever there is a saying that rabbits shouldn't be taken except months with an "R".  We actually have three different rabbits in Texas.  Everyone knows about the Jack Rabbit.   We also have the little Cottontail Rabbit and a larger Swamp Rabbit.

Here in Georgia squirrel season starts in August and runs until the end of February.  Trouble is in august when you have the woods to yourself it is too hot, too many ticks, and too many rattlers.  I would rather wait until the weather cools down.
