Title: Powder Horn Funnel
Post by: Brad925 on October 23, 2011
I accidently came across this trying to solve another problem which was filling my new powder horn. I always had a flask for powder before so this was my first horn. I would like to make one but thought i would try one of these first to see if i would like one. Anyway the problem was filling it. I didnt have a funnel that small so i took a .270 case which its neck fit the plug hole perfectly. Then i cut the head off and proceeded to pour powder through my reloading funnel through the case and into the horn. Not working. Powder was bridging off. I thought it was because of the small hole. I didnt look into it any further because it was getting late so i abandoned the horn and took that .270 case and an old lid from another powder can punched a hole in it and JB welded it in to make a pour spout that i could at least use at the range for now. I cut the neck off but probably wouldnt have had to. Now that i found the problem with the horn which is that the hole was poorly drilled leaving it partly blocked i rectified that with a round file. Now i made another cap leaving the neck on the case and it works perfectly to fill the horn from the can. Muzzleloading on the cheap!

Excellent!
I have been making those powder can lids into little pour spouts for years and they work realy well but I use either a 30-06 case or a .308 case. On a flask you put it on the powder can in place of the lid, take the spout off of the flask, open the valve, put the .30 cal case neck in the hole and place the flask with the inverted powder can against your ear. When you hear the powder stop flowing the flask is full. You should be able to do the same with a powder horn.

A temporary flask can be made by adding one to a powder can, but for safety remember to put a stopper in the spout when you are not pouring powder.

This is a great idea that I have used before also. It was easy to make & works well. I can't hear the powder flowing with my ear against the can anymore so I just pour for a while. Loud music, motorcycles, drag racing, & guns have all taken a toll on my hearing. Flintboomer & Brad925 you and all the other memers of this site that give info for the benifit of the others, is why this a great group. Glad to know you all. Take care...

I use a 3 inch piece of 5/16 brake line and drilled a cooresponding  hole in my lid for my Goex powder container..The lid was extra. I then epoxied the flanged end of the brake line to the goex lid and now have an effective "pour spout" in which to fill my powder horns with.
Take care all!

The easiest funnels for filling my horns i've found is those little black ears an nose cones that the doctors use to look inside your nose an ears with, anytime I go to the doctor they always leave me in a room by myself for 20 minutes or so an there is always a stack of them hanging on the wall so I liberate several. You can trim them so they just fit your powder horn an then pour away. Cheap an easy just like I like my oh never mind!!!

I liberated an old frosting cone from the wifes baking supplies and soldered it onto a goex cannister cap I had floating around and punched a hole in the cap works like a charm.

Here's what I use, a tin funnel I cobbled together from the lid of a fruit cocktail can. Soldered the seams and there you have it!

Hey, you know Hanshi, you're right!  ROFL But it works and cost nothing to make, and is pretty authentic as well. All you need is a large size tin can. The funnel part is made in one piece, and then the neck is another smaller rolled piece fitted into the first and soldered. Solder the seams and you're in business! You can get both pieces out of the one lid.  thmbsup
