I've been reading some of the posts on Tall Tales. I'm no story teller, but brings to mind a Movie I saw on tv back in the early seventies. Never see it anymore and thats a shame. It is a great movie, atleast to me. The actor is OLIVER REED, and the title of the movie is "THE TRAP". If you get a chance to see it, be prepared to sit uninterupted. It is that interesting. To me it is a true Mountain Man story.
this must be gold! I just went online to search for a copy - Netflix does not have it... found a copy on Amazon - $150.00 for a used VHS tape --- I don't think so... I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it comes on one of my local channels
It is GOLD. Found dvd questionable sources. one source is available but of from ? England. Cost $9.00 It is truely a great movie. Depicts the life of a Mountain Man, movie spans aprox 1 year of his life and times. Its a harsh and sometimes cruel life, But he chooses life, you gotta see it.

What time period is this supposed to take place in? I saw one guy wearing Sansabelt slacks, everyone has belt loops, the trapper carries what looks to be an 1853 3 band Enfield and the house has asphalt shingles!

The film is from 1966. There was no such thing as historic accuracy back then and no one really cared. Most still don't.
Fact is, most folks think WE are the wierd ones because we notice these things.

Well, that is certainly true. If I am watching movies like that with my friends and start pointing things like that out they either turn the channel or tell me to shut up and just enjoy the show. rdfce
The last part of the last sentence.
I've learned to keep my comments to myself about historical accuracy in movies. But ya can't help but notice. It's like those old sci fi movies where they are supposedly on another planet, but you can't help but notice the power lines in the background! lol

I was watching an old Bonanza clip the other day and they spoke of the elections of 1868.
That puts the 1873 SSA Colt pistols and 1873 Winchester rifles they all use a full 5 years before the date of invention!
I also remember Henry Fonda carrying a roofing hatchet for a tomahawk in Drums Along the Mohawk.
Even the classic movie The Mountain Men with Charlton Heston and Brian Keith had them using "converted" 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifles right out in front of God and everybody!
Just watched 'Black Robe' and do not know enough about the mid- 1600's Quebec to comment much on the HC/PC aspects but the only firearms were matchlocks. Early Jusuit missionaries were trekking into the interior, starting to convert the Hurons. Pretty dark but interesting movie.
