Title: Woodworking plans
Post by: William on July 10, 2011
This may have been posted before, forgive me if it's a duplicate.  This place has several plans from a folding camp chair, patrol box to ML'ing rifle stand, both in 3D and PDF form.  Even has a candle lantern.-http://vbwhiz.isa-geek.net/plans/

Hey William, they have been posted here before but it is good to keep them current. I have made the pistol stands for Blackfeet, and I have just finished the rifle stands, although I don't have a picture of them completed, here is a pic of them just before they are done, I still needed to add the cradle at the bottom and put a finish on them. I made them out of solid Ash and put thick ply on the bottom. On a solid surface they don't need to be anchored with the spikes, but on uneven ground I go with the spikes. I went withe the basic design, but changed a few minor things to accommodate the size of the pieces of Ash I had. Pictures of the finished stand will be up soon.

This is one of the finished stands set up for shooting a 32" barreled Seneca. Rocky did an outstanding job in the building and finishing of the stands. thmbsup
As you can see there is ample room for setting up all of the  shooting components. For those considering a build of this stand, the one shortcoming in the design that I encountered in use was that there is no provision for a ramrod or range rod of over 28" in length. This can be remedied by a receiving hole between pockets and a corresponding hole through or partially through only one layer of the baseplate. Another option might be the addition of an eyelet off the side of the tray.

[hmm] I am thinking that for barrels of longer rifles, an angled or leaned version of this stand would work great as this 32" barrel was about as tall as I can handle at 5' 9" tall. Rocky could probably handle a 42" with no problem though (susp)

Thank you Blackfeet! Great pics. Crazell, it took a lot longer than I thought it would, but I think the learning curve will go well with me next time I make one. Hardwoods are heavier and a bit harder to work with, so I am thinking of making some out of pine.  I have a good supply of nice pine and hardly any hardwood pieces left, so that leads me to trying pine. It is also lighter and just as sturdy for this project. I learned a few other things from the first two, so it will only be 2-4 hours of work spread out over time because of the finishing. I like using tung oil, does a great job of both protecting and finishing the wood, so the oils and grease and such won't be an issue. I will make the tray on top a little different too. The difference will give me a place to put the holes for the range rods and such. I build stuff to last and take reasonable abuse so this project has my name all over it.

I will draw up a new model with an angled cradle for the longer barrels for folks that are not 6' 7" (susp)
