I was thinking about buying one of these vent liners to help improve the ignition of my Dixie Jaeger flintlock. with lots of time at the range and keeping a sharp flint the gun is shooting really good now, with only a slight delay I was wondering if any one has used these vent liners and what your thoughts are. Thanks in advance for all your input.
I have a couple of friends that love them and one who doesn't like them. I have no personal experience with them.
Since the rifle is still new, to speed up the ignition a little take a round needle file and create some taper to the vent hole, try not to enlarge it, just taper it to funnel a little more heat in to your charge. You can always replace the vent later, or if you enlarge the hole too much it will be time to replace it.
Renegade, I am a newbie to this sport but I did replace the liner in my gpr within 1 month of purchase. May have improved ignition, but what really improved the ignition was using very little powder in flash pan. Small flash= big boom, big flash= delayed boom or none at all. You probably know this already, but this is what I learned.
In regard to the pan powder it depends on the gun. Some like just a little prime and some won't go off without a full pan. Find out what your gun likes.

It likes just a little bit of priming powder
I used to fill the pan, did not like the results. Got lots of flash but not too reliable, try that with a .75 cal. musket (Brown Bess). Have since learned that if the gun has the vent in the right spot, a good sharp flint, and a hard frizzen, it will fire with supprizing little prime powder. When I first started using those brass priming tools ,also the brass valves to make my own I thought "you got to be kidding". I have since learned that usually two to three grain valves are all it takes. Try with very little and add till it works best. As was stated, some guns reguire more.
I recently put a white lighting in my old Haines .50 thats about 13 years old so it was due anyhow.BIG improvement! But the best thing you can do if you're a gunsmith or know one is to tune the lock. Polish the tumbler and sear to a mirror finish...heck I even polished the top of the trigger! Its just as fast if not faster than a percussion.
Ive got a white lightning in my Isaac Haines 54 an I really like it. Its fast an goes off with just a little powder in the pan. But in the same breath I have a Caywood 12 ga english game gun that Danny Caywood outside coned the touchhole an it is also very fast. The next gun I build which is a 40 cal Isaac Haines I am going to try the snyder inside cone tool that I bought from Tom Snyder. If Im not happy with the speed then I will install a Chambers WL. thmbsup [conf]
