Title: I Could Use Some
Post by: hungryjohn on June 20, 2011
Advice. I been thinking on making a water bottle out of some rawhide I got. Trouble is, I don't really know wich would be best to seal it with. Beeswax or brewers pitch? Could any one here tell me what thier experiences with such items have been? What are the pros or cons of each? ???

Beeswax is easier to use & more flexible, brewers pitch is stronger. Both will dissolve in alcohol over a period of time. Personally I have only used them to seal rum horns & gourds, but I have a leather canteen sealed with beeswax. The leather absorbs the beeswax pretty well, I have not had any leakage issues...

Sounds interesting, Rev.

Care to share any construction details?

I think you would be better off with the brewers pitch. Sometimes if not done correctly the bees wax can flake. That mostly happens when it is applied to thickly. Which ever one you use preheat the water container in the oven. Not hot but just warm. It will help the wax/pitch adhere and soak into the leather. That has been my expirience any way
