Good question. I always thought that it was the size that determined the spacing of the suspender, a skinny person would not require the same distance beteen the straps as a person of my girth....

Actually, "suspenders" of the mid 1700s thru the mid 1800s were not sewn together. Sewing together was a convenience that came later. They were also not called suspenders, they were called braces or galluses. At times they were worn as a single strap rather than as a pair. They were made of different materials from leather to silk ribbon depending on the status of the person, where they were and what they were doing. Harness leather was common to a farmer, blacksmith or stablehand. Silk ribbon was common to the rich. Hemp strap was also often used. Braces were not seen in proper company as they were considered under garments, they would have been worn under a shirt untucked or under a weskit. Normally they were made for a specific person as they were not adjustable. Most all the suspenders you see for sale at events are proper for the very late 1800s. Hope this helps you out a little in what you're trying to do.

I'll just add, that I wear suspenders everyday and they are the type with two clips on the back attached to my trousers. If you measure on back clip to clip, they measure about 9 inches across and about 10 inches up each strap to the junction where they cross. If you are making these suspenders for "Bugskinners", you might want to have button holes instead of any clips! JMHO
