Title: Pouches Just Finished
Post by: absaroka on May 08, 2011
One of my favorite ways to relax is making these pouches.  All have an internal hanging pocket.  The bottom three have bottom gussets and were dyed with a vinegar and iron brew.

Those are some nice looking bags.. What type of leather are you using. This might be a stupid question. What is iron brew?

I use 2 to 3 ounce vegetable tanned tooling leather.  The dye is made by putting old nails, barb wire, etc. (anything that will rust) in a container of cider vinegar.  After a week or so, it can be applied and the leather will turn a nice dark gray/black.  The smell will go away after time.  I put a coat of extra virgin olive oil on as a final finish.

Sorry to take so long to reply.  They are made to carry over the shoulder.  About 8x9 inches in size.

Just now saw these. Very nice work! Thanks for the vinegar/iron dye tip. I make my own wood stain that way and never thought to try it on leather.
