Title: New type of powder II
Post by: Blackfeet on February 20, 2011, 03:18:09 AM
I read the last thread with much interest. I was online today and was at powder, inc. I found Diamondback BP there at $11 a pound and KIK as well. Have any of you used either of these powders?

Diamondback powder is made in Brazil, it's the old Elephant brand, and the reviews I have found on it are not favorable.  It sells for $11/pound but you can only buy it by the case, so you'd have to shell out $275 just to try it and I've never seen it offered locally.  KiK is supposed to be very consistent and clean burning but I have no firsthand knowledge of either one.

kIK is only a dollar less than Goex in case lot pricing. I like the price of the Goex at $13.96 compared to the $18.95 - $19.95 that I'm paying here but I'm not sure that I need 25 lbs or maybe what I'm saying is that I will have to find more lead [hmm]. What is the shelf life if stored properly? Ideally it would be nice to split a case

Form personnel experience. I was given 3 cans that had been in storage for over 10 years. I could not tell any difference between them and the new cans I had just bought.

Shelf life if dry and clean----Oh, about 100years....Have use it after 32yrs in the garage and it worked fine....Graf and sons has a special 15 dollar haz fee this weekend..if you are quick. Five pounds and that fee only adds $3/lb..not to bad..13.99 graf or 14.99 goex.

I just pickup a pound of "KIK" black powder as a blanket prize. Has anyone tried or used the "KIK" brand of powder? I know it's been mention on here, but nobody has put down their results. Let me know. Thank you.

I use goex in my rifles, anything in my smoothbores. I still have @ 5lbs of DuPont 3f thats @ 180 yrs old,and it's cleaner and more consistant than ANYTHING around today. The flame out the end of the barrel is RED, not orange. Wish I had more. I use it when I really want to win,but I usually just end up embarrasing myself!  hdslp

Some folks say it's better than Goex by a little bit but not as good as Swiss.  Don't know how they rated that or of any tests they did or didn't perform.  Just use it and tell us what you think, one doesn't need a better excuse to go out and burn some powder if it's free.

Blackfeet, thats mighty nice of you. I would feel terrible if your shooting drop off from using this. So i guess I'll have to suck it up and shoot it. This weekend is suppose to be nice. I'll keep you posted...

Ah, Ron, you miss the point, I have been lucky to have shot enough to have gotten a baseline for comparison so I will be able to evaluate even the most minute difference in my shooting. I realize that it is a burden but I will do this for you, just this once

I haven't tried the KIK powder but I have shot GOEX Elephant and Shuetsen brands and won a pound of GOI that was probably 30 or so years old. They all shot fine, but the Sheutsen is a little hotter and the old GOI was definitely hotter, so for them I had to reduce my loads by about 10%-20% to get my normal point of impact.
I am guessing that you will need to reduce your loads 10% with KIK from what I have heard and if you ever wind up with any SWIS you will need to reduce your loads by 20%.

Have fun testing, or send it to me, I can always use a good excuse to go make smoke and put holes in targets!

ML I just bought came with 2 pounds of Elephant 2f. Used it and really liked it. Fouling was soft, accuracy was supurb with gun/load used. I don't know how old it is but the gun and powder has been sitting in storage since 1993 or 94'.

I still have a little of the old Elephant brand. I never had any problem with it but I shoot rather light loads for my target work. A lot of people told me that it left a little more fowling than GOEX in 2f and about the same as GOEX in 3f. Ballistics were within 2%, so I would not hesitate to use it.
I normally use GOEX for consistancy but will shoot anything I win and I will buy whatever I can find when I get desperate for powder.

I have been using Kik for 5 years or so.Its a good powder,a little hotter than Goex I believe. There have been reports from the "measure the difference with a micrometer guys"about accuracy issues.Since I feel fortunate to hit the paper thats not an issue. It doesn't cause any cleanup problems.

Never used the KIK powder, but I once tried the 2f and 3f Elephant.  The 3f Elephant worked the best of the two (for me).
I can't remember the last time I bought anything other then Goex.  I'm pretty much sold on this powder, but I've been using
it for 30+ years at least.  Kind of hard for me to make changes I guess...  noway

I use Diamondback, and some other club members do also,,,I started with Goex switched to diamondback (remember "on the cheap"),, and all though I am not an expert shot, I find not a lot of difference in it,,,except for the price,, leans up just as easily,(or should I say as hard) we share the cost of a case so no one gets hit real hard,,,    flwa
