Post by: redhawk on February 17, 2011
Well not really, but we are a getting tease this week.  It was 70 today and sure felt like spring.  Suppose to be in the upper 60's to 70 this weekend.  I have done told my madame not to make any plans for me Saturday I am going to burn some powder.  This will be the first Saturday I have had in a while that was pretty and I didn't have plans made for me.  Hope some of ya'll that have been blaster by winter this year are getting some relief too.

Had a great Saturday.  Spent the first half of the day playing on my tractor I got back in the first of February.  Then spent the afternoon shooting my Mallory and my little 32 cal long rifle.  Had a good time even got mama to shoot with me. She almost got the best of me til I got in the groove.  Beautiful day, sunny and high around 65.  Been nice the last couple days just windy. Softens you up and will make the March winds bite . Winter ain't over yet.

We've had more snow this week than I believe we've had all winter and it's still coming. There's a certain groundhog that a lot of people are losing faith in.

Blackfeet that looks cold!!  It was 79 here today and suppose to be that warm tomorrow.  Everything is budding out and is going to get bitten I am afraid.  That will mean no peaches or apples this year.  I got a tick off me today.  I can do with out them buggers.  Saw a turkey gobbler chasing a hen this morning so I am wondering if spring might be right around the corner.  Almanac says snow the middle of the month so we ain't out of the woods yet.

Another 4-5" inches this morning with 3/8" of ice due in tonight. Spring, when it does arrive, is going to give one heck of a mud season

It might be here - the last of the snow is melting.  Only piles are on the north side of the house.  Supposed to hit 50F this weekend.  So excited that I think I will wash the car --- hmmm -- maybe not.  Drained the gas from the snowblower so if it snows again, I'll just wait for it to melt. cuch

We had it in the sixties today, my bees were flyin' everywhere. This is a first this year up here. I figure those five foot snow banks in the shade will be gone in a week or two.

They say the bees are all dying off, if thats the case it's only a matter of time before were next. Most people don't fathom how important bee's are.

Hawk: Actually the Bees aren't dying off - the single biggest problem is the Varroa mite that attacks bee colonies and can totally decimate an active colony in two seasons - but not to be out done, Bee experts are working hard to develop bees in this country that are resistant to the mites and actually seek them out and destroy them in the colonies. I tend to stay far away as being allergic, one sting can ruin my day. OK enough of Tim's early morning ramblings? yakyak

I've haven't heard about the Varroa mites. Where did thay come from and how long ago?
Title: Re: Spring has sprung
Post by: Tim Burns on April 12, 2011
Crazell: Here is a Link or 2.
The Varroa mite was discovered in Southeast Asia in 1904, but now unfortunately spread mostly worldwide. More recently Varroa was discovered in 1987 within the US, 2000 in the North Island of New Zealand, 2007 in the South Island of New Zealand and 2008 in Australia.

Don't want to steal a thread or get to far off topic - that fury butted Badger will load up Patience and be out lookin for us!!!

Grey Fox those links are fascinating. I guess that would explain why I don't see very many bees around. Even though our spring here hasn't sprung, I'll be keeping my eye out for just how many bee's I see. Learn new things every day on this site. I love it !! Thanks again.

That's just crazy, we are in Stage 1 watering restrictions already as we haven't had any substantial rain this year yet.  62 hours below freezing back in February, a new record for South Texas, then we hit 93 degrees in April already.

Another sign of spring, A bear has hit my hive, he walked right through the electric fence. One hive gone, the other shaken up pretty good. Gonna put bacon on the wires, he will not like that. Spring is here, even though we had two inches of snow yesterday.

Went to a club shoot yesterday (Saturday) the weather was ok but cool when I left the house but it was snowing by the time I got to the range. We shot anyway.
We have had some really nice weather, some wind, and a little snow and rain during the last week.

I really don't take pictures very often, and last year when Sherpa and I went to the range to shoot we had to email the pictures to someone else to get them uploaded to the sight.

I will try to remember to take some pics Memorial day when I go to the big rondy/shoot in Florence, Co. We have paper matches, primitive, a novelty shoot (somewhat like a trail walk) and a mountain man & mountain mama run.
Unfortunately we have had some cancellations due to weather and fire danger the last few years and attendance has dropped off for that reason and also because of a general loss of interest in traditional muzzleloading.
If I can remember to take the camera I will take a few shots at the squirrel rifle match next weekend weather permitting, then see if I can figure out how to post them.

Rocky get moth balls and put around the outside of your fence  in the dirt, about every couple feet,  I use to work in the forest thats how we kept the bears out of our food stashes. They lead with thier noses, they won't like it.

Brokenhawk, that is a good idea for short term, but it doesn't last long. That would be something I would use at Rondy around here. I used them when I hiked parts of the John Muir trail. There were more bears than people. Around here, the bears will continually come back and look for an opening. Moth balls smell goes away.
