Going to make some moccasins for my wife and me. I have the Michael Galban DVD, a couple of books and sewing supplies. What is the best material to use for making a trial pair of mocs to refine my technique and patterns. Will have to work in the ortho insoles and don't want to waste the hide in the process.
Any input will be appreciated.

What I usually find myself using is called garment suede. It's cowhide that's suedded on both sides and can be bought in a 3 to 4 ounce weight that works well for mocs. Even though it's a bit harder to sew than a good braintan, it's also fairly low in price compaired to other leathers and wears longer than braintan does.
When you make the tracing of her feet have her stand on the inserts and wear the same type socks she'll be using when mocs are finished.
Thanks all.

For a practice run I would use a heavy canvas. I t is a good idea to do a practice run on a garment you have never made before. That has saved me some expensive fabric.
I have used old blue jeans as test fabric .
Blanket scraps. Then you will have a comfy pair of slippers.
that green felt stuff you get at the craft stores. Cheap, easy to cut and sew and makes you a decent pair of slippers to scuff along the carpet to zap the old lady. Or you can use them to line your mocs. blah
I like the idea of zapping the old lady. Get a good charge built up and get her on the tip of her nose as she's sleeping in the recliner.

If your Lady is any thing like Blue Bird, I have the following suggestions
1. Make reservation with the ICU of local hospital.
2. Alert the EMS team. ROFL ROFL ROFL
hdslp Might want to make sure they have airlift on standby too.
and don't forget to have the life and hospitalization insurance paid up.. she will need something to live on while you are recuperating... or don't pull through......
Just use the leather your going to use anyway. The orthodic's will fit, leather stretches. I'd rather waste leather instead of time. Leather is replacable, time is not!
