Not so Smart... / Re: Dryball?

Yep, there can be only 1 .  I used to carry on fairly frequent conversations with our revered #1 and remember those days fondly.  So let's just modify that earned award title to "O No Powder".   flwa

I think he would appreciate someone taking that name... Remember he started the site as NED CHRISTY and only became Dryball after his own lack of foresight...

REMEMBER IT IS NOT ME that keeps the site up and running... ALL of us do it by logging in and looking around...

been about two years since I`ve been to my uncles shooting range ! not sure I remember which goes down the barrel first , the powder or the ball !

Okay!  IIRC the ball goes in first followed by powder then a patch.  [hmm]

Come on we all know it is P-P-B-SW...  POWDER- PATCH- BALL  then pour a shot of Whiskey down the Barrel to seat everything   :blech:

We are in trouble, I will admit it.  COVID and a general lack of participation is hitting us hard.  I went to WOOl-A-ROC for 1 day this spring and saw a beautiful sight... over 150 camps set up, but no one was at the range the day I was there, the price of powder, and the fact that most of the people I saw were there to camp and see old friends took precedence over the traditional events... and now the current Booshway is adding Highlander games and taking some of the others out... I hope to get to go to fall event, but I am still the only one at the museum... so may not get to go...

I don't know how the other sites are doing but I did see some posts about some of the other events in Oklahoma having attendance and staffing event issues.  On the bright side there was a post from one young couple saying they came for the first time and had a blast and would definitely be back... We just need to get out and talk to the younger generation and get them involved... post you pictures on facebook and X and those other sites and tell them what fun you used to have... Save the tradition!

This has been covered elsewhere but here goes...

FLINT RULES I have 3 Long rifles/ 2 Muskets/ 4 pistols

Percussion cap - only when necessary: 3 Rifles, 2 shotguns, 2 single shot pistols, 6 revolvers....

Lock - depends on the gun but as long as it functions any one will do the job

Load I start with enough powder to equal the calibre, then increase until I get consistent grouping.  then for hunting usually double that charge and see where I group...

I like them all, yes I do.  Flint is my favorite, has been for a long time and is all I've hunted with for many years.  I don't hunt any longer but they are still what I grab for when I leave the house to make smoke.  A quick count tells me I have two percussion rifles I love and one other that is inoperable but could be brought back in service with a tiny bit of work.  Tucked away are seven (7) flint long guns and a flint pistol for a total of eight (8).  IAC, one (1) is a .32, one (1) .36, (4) four .45, two (2) .50, one (1) .54 and one (1) smoothbore .62.  I think this is all correct.

Now, in hotfxr's defense we never said he was not "quite right".  We just said he was "special" due to the lightening strike that set his head on fire that time.

I absolutely prefer flints to caps. I guess I don't have enough stress in my life and crave that extra level of difficulty. If you ask Hanshi, he will truthfully tell you I was never considered "quite right" from a very early age.

Does anyone want to post whether they prefer flint or percussion? I like both but I usually shoot percussion.
I do shoot slightly better with percussion, but only slightly better.
Both have to be cleaned and taken good care of or they will let you down.

I'm still around, but unless I have something to post there isn't enough activity here to do more than check in a couple times a week.

Spring Rendesvous will be in Sterling Oklahoma in a couple of weeks but most of the people on this site are too far away to come. We do have enough shooters to keep the club going.
